Horizon Zero Dawn stunned players with red grass that swayed in the breeze and moonlight reflecting off the backs of deadly machines. Death Stranding likewise impressed with its bleak, beautiful mountains and the endless desert of the sequel, On the Beach.

Both games were built in Guerilla Games' 13-year-old Decima engine. "It offered many of the capabilities needed to build an open-world game," Kojima Productions CTO Akio Sakamoto said. "While some aspects are less immediately approachable than commercial engines, its runtime rendering analysis tools stood out."

That combination of open-world capabilities and mature rendering tools helped the teams accomplish many things that would be difficult to achieve elsewhere.
