14 Years Later, Ridley Scott's Ambitious Sci-Fi Reboot Is Winning Big on Streaming
FlixPatrol shows Prometheus topped Netflix's global chart this week, nearly 15 years after its initial theatrical run. The 2012 film made more than $400 million worldwide against a reported $130 million budget, yet reactions were mixed: some viewers found it plodding and self-serious, others thought it too silly.
It inspired a wave of memes and remains ridiculed in certain circles, while also leading to the direct sequel Alien: Covenant, which earned around $270 million worldwide on a budget reported to be under $100 million. Prometheus holds a "Certified Fresh" 73% score on Rotten Tomatoes, where critics praised Ridley Scott's visual grandeur and Michael Fassbender's performance even as they noted the film leaves big questions unanswered.
The franchise later saw renewed interest when Fede Álvarez's Alien: Romulus grossed $350 million worldwide and received positive reviews. Scott is returning to science fiction with the upcoming The Dog Stars, starring Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin and Margaret Qualley.
