Sony moves a third '28 Years Later' film into development with Garland, Murphy involved
Movieweb reports Sony has moved a third 28 Years Later film into active development, with original writer Alex Garland attached and Cillian Murphy in talks to reprise his role as Jim. The push follows the early critical momentum for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which begins rolling out in mid-January 2026 and currently holds a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score in early response.
Garland and producer Danny Boyle reportedly envisioned the revival as a three-part story, and Sony’s decision to proceed reflects reactions to The Bone Temple rather than a studio-only box-office calculation. Murphy, who served as an executive producer on 28 Years Later, appears briefly in The Bone Temple and would return in a larger capacity if talks conclude.
The ensemble expected to continue includes Alfie Williams, Erin Kellyman, Chi Lewis-Parry and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The Bone Temple ends with Jim raising a young daughter and leaves questions—such as the absence of Naomi Harris’s Selena and the fate of the Holy Island community—that could shape the third film.
