28 Years Later, 'American History X' Arrives on Free Streaming
The 1998 Oscar-nominated film American History X, starring Edward Norton and Edward Furlong, has been added to Tubi's free streaming library. The project was fraught from the start: actors passed, producers struggled to find a director, and Tony Kaye ultimately disowned the final cut after studio interference following early test screenings.
Even with a limited release, the film became one of the most discussed titles of the ’90s for its chilling violence and the performances by Norton and Furlong. The story follows Derek Vinyard, a former neo-Nazi who goes to prison after killing two Black youths who tried to steal his car.
Upon release he vows to change and tries to keep his younger brother Danny from following the same path, while the family confronts ingrained prejudice and a mother's declining health. Many view the film as a realistic, poignant portrait of racism and an essential document on the dynamics of hate.
