Collider reports that 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is locked in a tight battle with James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash for the number one spot at the domestic box office this weekend. After a reported $2 million in Thursday previews ahead of the MLK holiday weekend, The Bone Temple made just under $6 million on its full opening day and is projected to gross around $15 million over its first four days, putting it just behind Avatar 3, which is eyeing about $17 million in its fifth weekend.

The sequel, filmed back-to-back with last year's 28 Years Later and directed by Nia DaCosta, continues the story following a menacing cult revealed at the end of the previous film and brings back Ralph Fiennes and Alfie Williams. The Bone Temple reportedly cost more than $60 million to produce, while 28 Years Later ultimately made $150 million at the global box office.
