Movieweb reports that 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple dethroned Avatar: Fire and Ash at the domestic box office after a 27-day run, with the horror sequel's Thursday previews drawing $2.1 million.

Avatar: Fire and Ash, which had held number one since debuting on December 19, earned $1.48 million on the same day and fell to second on the daily chart. The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta as a continuation of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's dystopian horror franchise, currently holds a 94% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 90% audience rating; critics have called it a "scary, savvy fright fest" elevated by "incredible performances from Jack O'Connell and Ralph Fiennes."

The film's previews came ahead of its full release over Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, and its performance suggests it may hold the top spot through the weekend while Avatar begins to lose its grip as attention turns to an upcoming VOD release. There could be a slightly longer wait for the trilogy's final part, which will see Danny Boyle back behind the camera.
