12 Monkeys premiered on Syfy on January 16, 2015, created by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett as an adaptation of the 1995 film that starred Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, Brad Pitt, and Christopher Plummer. Critical reception improved markedly after the first season: the debut season of 13 episodes holds a 60% Rotten Tomatoes score, Season 2 rose to 92%, and the final two seasons each reached 100%.

Natalie Chaidez served as showrunner in Season 1 before stepping down; Matalas and Fickett then took over, with Matalas the sole showrunner for Seasons 3 and 4. The fourth and final season ran 11 episodes, premiering June 15, 2018, and concluding July 6, 2018. After its conclusion the series faded from view but has since resurfaced on PVOD charts.
