A New Cult Classic Just Logged a 300% Box Office Increase
After a record-breaking theatrical debut on just four screens, a new mockumentary expanded nationwide this past weekend and saw a nearly 300 percent increase in revenue from its debut. The film grossed around $1.7 million at the domestic box office this weekend, a per-theater average of roughly $3,000, bringing its domestic total to $2.2 million after opening with about $425,000 from four locations.
The movie is still only playing in a little more than 500 locations across North America, a fraction of the markets it could theoretically reach. Distributor A24 seems to be giving it a textbook platform release, and the film ended up outperforming the likes of Marty Supreme, Hamnet, and a host of other Oscar contenders.
The Moment is a mockumentary in which Charli XCX satirizes the idea of fame and virality in the digital age.
