Abigail Spanberger faces backlash from the right in her first month as governor
In her first weeks as governor of Virginia, Abigail Spanberger moved quickly on several fronts, ending all cooperation agreements between state law enforcement and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, signing a bill to put a proposed redistricting map to an April vote, and pressing five University of Virginia board members to resign after their role in the White House effort to remove the university president.
Those actions have drawn fierce criticism from conservatives, who have labeled her a witch, a "Bond villain," and worse. Media figures and activists circulated a doctored photo casting her as the White Witch and called her dangerous; one commentator said she was "moving at high speed to permanently radicalize and change the state." Ms.
Spanberger views the uproar as evidence of the threat she poses to Republicans after her decisive November victory. Spanberger ran as a centrist Democrat and former C.I.A. case officer, campaigning on lowering housing, utility and health care costs.
