After 105 hours with Mewgenics, it's no surprise it's a 90 on Metacritic
Mewgenics, the new cat-breeding roguelike from the creator of The Binding of Isaac, has finally launched after 13 years since its original announcement. The project endured a cancellation and a reboot during that time, yet it has met the long wait and the high bar set by its predecessor — which the developer has suggested began as a testing ground for roguelikes before making Mewgenics.
Critical response has been strong: Mewgenics is the first game of 2026 to score in the 90s on both Metacritic and OpenCritic, where it currently sits at 90. Most reviews cluster around nine out of ten, with a handful of tens and eights, and OpenCritic briefly ranked it as the second-highest rated game ever, behind Mario Odyssey.
I've been playing since review codes went out and logged 105 hours at the time of writing; it lives up to the hype and feels like a worthy follow-up to my most-played game, The Binding of Isaac.
