AI analysis casts doubt on Van Eyck paintings in Turin and Philadelphia
An analysis of two near-identical unsigned paintings titled Saint Francis of Assisi Receiving the Stigmata, hanging in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Royal Museums of Turin, has raised a profound question: what if neither were by Jan van Eyck? The works have long been counted among the small number of surviving paintings attributed to the 15th-century Flemish master.
Scientific tests using artificial intelligence carried out by Art Recognition, in collaboration with Tilburg University, failed to detect Van Eyck’s brushstrokes.
