Alan Jackson, the high-profile criminal defense lawyer who was representing Nick Reiner, removed himself from the case during a hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday. Mr. Reiner is accused of killing his parents and was scheduled to be arraigned on two counts of first-degree murder.

At the hearing Mr. Reiner, 32, wearing a brown jumpsuit, did not enter a plea. A judge rescheduled the arraignment for Feb. 23 and directed the case to the public defender’s office. The announcement of Mr. Jackson’s withdrawal came as lawyers noted it may suggest the Reiner family has distanced itself from Mr.

Reiner, at least financially. After Mr. Reiner’s arrest last month, lawyers for the family arranged for Mr. Jackson to take the case, a person with knowledge of the situation told The New York Times on condition of anonymity. The person emphasized that the change in representation “had nothing to do with Mr.

Jackson’s performance” and said he had been professional. In a statement to The Times, a spokesman for the Reiner family said, “They have the utmost trust in the legal process and will not comment further on matters related to the legal proceedings.” Mr. Jackson had previously agreed to delay an arraignment to review evidence and told reporters there were “very complex and serious issues associated with this case” that needed time to be examined.
