According to People, Alexander Gould, 31, praised the cast and crew of Weeds for sheltering him from much of the series' intense content while he played Shane Botwin.

Gould first found success as the voice of Nemo in Finding Nemo and, two years after that film's premiere, was cast as Shane on the Showtime dark comedy-drama, which aired from 2005–2012. He said he was often given his lines and limited context so he did not always know what was happening around him, and called the cast and crew—including Mary-Louise Parker, Hunter Parrish, Kevin Nealon and guest actors such as Richard Dreyfuss and Albert Brooks—'amazing.' Gould added that the series covered the formative years of his life, beginning when he was 10 and ending when he was 18.

After Weeds he stopped acting to travel and attend college, returned briefly in 2018 before two projects were canceled by COVID and then took another break. He is now auditioning again, posting on social media, opening up about his experience growing up in Hollywood, and said he is 'going to be starting a podcast, probably just after the new year' to explore child-acting experiences.
