Alexandre Pato has been linked with a consortium interested in a possible takeover of Colchester United, and has been urged to take inspiration from Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac’s visible approach at Wrexham, GOAL reported on Jan 29, 2026. EFL pundit Don Goodman said the interest is a positive sign but stressed there is little detail about the consortium — questioning whether it includes football experience, what its ambitions are and why it wants the club.

He noted owner Robbie Cowling has said selling would be like handing over one of his children, so any deal must be the right fit. Goodman specifically recommended Colchester follow Wrexham’s lead by allowing cameras in and making a proper documentary, saying: “Allow cameras in! Make a good documentary about your football club.

Do it properly and involve yourself.” He pointed to Wrexham’s three successive promotions and the global fan base generated after Reynolds and Mac opened up the club. Colchester have spent around a decade in League Two, narrowly avoiding relegation last season, and currently sit 10th — four points shy of the play-off places with 19 games remaining.

GOAL noted the club now has an experienced and ambitious manager in place, and that new investment, including speculation around Pato, could provide a boost. Goodman warned there is still “a lot of water to go under the bridge” and more information is needed on the consortium’s aims and experience.
