A review in Theguardian says that while it’s tempting to say the RSC has put a grenade under its repertoire by programming All Is But Fantasy, Whitney White’s gig-theatre quartet is not so much exploding Shakespeare as needling at it. White, a Black woman, takes on four Shakespeare characters — Lady Macbeth, Emilia from Othello, Juliet and Richard III — to question who’s allowed to take up space in these works and which parts of the canon are open to her.

She is joined by a shape-shifting chorus of witches (Renée Lamb, Georgina Onuorah and Timmika Ramsay), a white male performer (Daniel Krikler) as the ever-present “he”, and a white female foil (Juliette Crosbie) representing the sorts of actors who will for ever be Juliets.
