Amazon will shut down New World servers in January 2027
Kotaku reports Amazon will retire its in-house MMO New World, taking its servers offline in January 2027. The news drew public criticism from Facepunch Studios’ COO Alistair McFarlane, who wrote on X, '25m, final offer Amazon Games,' and added, 'Games should never die.' When asked what buying New World would look like for the Rust maker, he wrote, 'Give them control, make servers publicly hostable.
A game will live forever in the hands of a dedicated community.' The writing for New World, which once exploded in popularity on Steam, had been on the wall since last fall: Amazon announced in late October the game would be put on life support with no meaningful additions planned, and servers would remain open and operating 'through 2026' to allow the community 'time to continue their adventures in Aeternum.' An unattributed blog post on the game's site thanked players: 'We want to thank the players for your dedication and passion.
We are grateful for the time spent crafting the world of Aeternum with you' and 'While we are saddened to say goodbye, we’re honored that we were able to share so much with the community.' New World is no longer for sale, but owners can re-download and play until January 31, 2027.
