Anaconda reaches $101M, overtakes several Jack Black films including Nacho Libre
Movieweb reports that Jack Black's Anaconda has taken $101 million at the box office, reaching the milestone in its third weekend of release against a $45 million budget.
The remake, which stars Black and Paul Rudd and is a meta reworking of the 1997 Jennifer Lopez creature feature, has outgrossed several entries in Black's filmography, including Borderlands, High Fidelity, Shallow Hal, Tim Burton's Mars Attacks!, and Nacho Libre. Anaconda has earned a 76% Popcornmeter score, indicating a generally positive audience response.
Nacho Libre, released June 16, 2006, was originally met with mixed reviews — a 39% Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer and a 55% audience score — and its plot centers on Ignacio (Jack Black), a monastery cook who becomes a Lucha Libre wrestler to raise money for orphans. In the last six months Nacho Libre has been added to several streaming platforms and has drawn renewed, often positive reactions, with some recent reviews calling it "a childhood classic" or questioning its low rating.
The film's longer-term standing remains uncertain: Anaconda is performing well so far, but whether it will become a lasting favorite in Black's catalogue will depend on its continued box office and audience response.
