Andy Carroll has denied breaching a non-molestation order by allegedly repeatedly calling his former wife, Billi Mucklow. He entered a not guilty plea at Chelmsford magistrates court on Wednesday. At the brief hearing Carroll, wearing a green coat and using crutches with a left-foot brace, confirmed his name, address and date of birth and said he would prefer to be tried in crown court.

District Judge Roy Brown bailed Carroll and said his next appearance will be at Chelmsford crown court on 4 March for a plea and trial preparation hearing, when he will be asked to enter a plea and, if it remains not guilty, arrangements for a trial will be made.

Carroll, 37, plays for National League South club Dagenham & Redbridge and previously played for Newcastle, Liverpool, West Ham, Reading and West Brom; he won nine England caps between 2010 and 2012, scoring twice, including at Euro 2012.
