Antoine Semenyo helps Man City beat Newcastle 2-0 in Carabao Cup semi
Independent.co reports Manchester City beat Newcastle 2-0 in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final as new signing Antoine Semenyo scored and Rayan Cherki added a 99th-minute second. The result was made possible in part by a rule change this season that allows players to represent two clubs in the competition, a revision Eddie Howe said had come at a bad time after Semenyo had been knocked out of the cup in August with Bournemouth.
Semenyo, who scored on his debut against Exeter, finished from a Jeremy Doku cross that Bernardo Silva diverted into his path; Pep Guardiola said: "Every time the ball arrives to him, he always is there." The report noted that not since Emmanuel Adebayor in 2009 had a player scored in his first two games for City.
A later Semenyo effort was ruled out after an extended VAR check and Erling Haaland was adjudged offside, prompting Silva to say: "It should have been 3-0," and Guardiola to add: "Four officials and VAR were not able to take the decision," saying his players were "angry." City eventually doubled after a one-two between Cherki and Rayan Ait-Nouri ended with an adept finish.
