Apple adds foveated streaming to the Vision Pro
After the Steam Frame promised a fresh take on home VR last year, Apple has added foveated streaming to the Vision Pro. The Steam Frame has yet to arrive due to ongoing launch and pricing issues, but the idea of reducing streamed detail based on where a user is looking has clearly gained traction.
Foveated streaming limits bitrate according to gaze, using eye tracking to prioritise the fovea—the part of the eye with the clearest vision. That approach is useful for devices that wirelessly receive data, since wireless links are more limited than wired ones.
Apple says the feature can work with content from a local PC or streamed from the cloud, and that combining streaming and on-device rendering could lower demands on the headset.
