Arco director links Academy Award-nominated film to 2015 music video
Arco, the Academy Award-nominated Best Animated Feature, follows Iris, a young girl living in 2075 amid environmental disaster and heavy reliance on technology. Disconnected from her parents, Iris’s life brightens when Arco, a boy from the future who travels through time with a rainbow cape and bodysuit, arrives.
In a new featurette, director Ugo Bienvenu traces the film’s painterly look back to his work on music videos. He and co-writer Félix de Givry met on the set of Mia Hansen-Løve’s Eden and their first collaboration was a 2015 video for French electropop band Jabberwocky’s “Fog.” De Givry highlights clear echoes: opaque, multi-hued glasses and a falling figure with billowing clothing closely mirror moments from Arco, and the featurette’s side-by-side comparison makes the music video resemble an Arco animation test.
