Arsenal thumped African Champions League holders AS FAR Rabat 6-0 in the semi-final of the inaugural Women's Champions Cup on Wednesday at the Gtech Community Stadium, with England striker Alessia Russo scoring twice as the Gunners sealed a place in Sunday’s final at the Emirates Stadium against Corinthians.

Arsenal opened the scoring early when Stina Blackstenius headed in from Laia Codina’s cross inside the six-yard box. Frida Maanum then doubled the lead in the 11th minute after Olivia Smith chested a fine ball from Smilla Holmberg into the path of the midfielder, who spun and hit a half-volley into the top corner.

Before the 20th minute Arsenal were awarded a penalty after a blatant handball blocked a Holmberg effort; Mariona Caldentey calmly converted from the spot to make it 3-0. AS FAR briefly grew into the game, but five minutes before half-time Smith slalomed into space and scored from range to stretch Arsenal’s lead.

Renee Slegers made several second-half changes to keep the side fresh, and Russo — on for Blackstenius around the hour — struck twice after coming off the bench, first pouncing on a rebound and then finishing low into the bottom corner to complete the rout. GOAL described the contest as one-sided and noted Arsenal will be confident heading into the final as they bid to win the first edition of the competition.
