At the Puppy Bowl, the Athletes Are Up for Adoption
Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl, now in its 22nd year, has become a Super Bowl Sunday counterprogramming staple — a four-hour marathon of doggy antics, cat cameos and the occasional poop pun. Beyond the spectacle, the event’s purpose is plain: the players on the field are up for adoption.
When the latest Puppy Bowl was shot in October at an arena in Glens Falls, N.Y., 150 dogs from 72 shelters gathered for four days of glorified playtime. Victoria Schade, the Puppy Bowl’s lead trainer, keeps the contestants in good spirits and is often right next to the camera with a treat to coax a shot.
She also found a new companion at the event: Boris, a pug-Chihuahua mix then known as Mr. Pickles.
