Avatar 3 Passes Top Gun: Maverick as Box Office Run Winds Down
After nine weeks in theaters worldwide, James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash has crossed the $1 billion mark overseas and sits at around $1.46 billion globally, with just under $400 million from domestic cinemas. It has not matched the franchise’s earlier runs: the first Avatar grossed $2.9 billion and Avatar: The Way of Water made $2.3 billion.
The threequel reportedly cost $400 million to produce, plus millions more to market. It holds a 66% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes—the lowest of the trilogy—and is the first installment not to earn a Best Picture Oscar nomination. Cameron has said the franchise’s future depends on Fire and Ash’s performance and on adopting a far leaner budget.
Financially, Fire and Ash recently overtook Top Gun: Maverick, which earned $1.45 billion worldwide and more than $700 million domestically. Kosinski’s film was credited with helping restore big-screen attendance and carries a 96% critics’ score and a 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes; a sequel is being planned.
