Avatar: Fire and Ash Overtakes Guardians Vol. 2 Domestically
After more than 50 days in release, Avatar: Fire and Ash moved past Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on the domestic chart, carrying a running total of over $390 million. The threequel dropped out of the domestic top five this past weekend but added roughly $3.5 million in its eighth weekend, finishing seventh.
James Gunn’s Guardians sequel made about $389 million domestically and roughly $870 million worldwide, and earned strong reviews, holding an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes. By contrast, Fire and Ash received lukewarm notices and missed out on a Best Picture nomination.
Fire and Ash will probably clear a $400 million domestic total in the coming days, but appears likely to fall short of $1.5 billion worldwide. It trails the original Avatar by around $1.5 billion and Avatar: The Way of Water by about $1 billion, and may become the first entry in the series to miss the $2 billion mark.
