Collider reports the new teaser for Avengers: Doomsday — currently set as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's 39th film — points to a return to a more serious Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth.

The roughly minute-and-a-half teaser eschews jokes and centers on Thor praying to his father Odin for strength, while highlighting his role as a father (his daughter Love, introduced in Thor: Love and Thunder, is played by Hemsworth's real-life daughter India Rose Hemsworth). The piece notes directors Joe and Anthony Russo appear to be refocusing on established characters as Marvel aims to recreate the excitement of earlier eras.

Thor's run has been described as tumultuous, with shifts from drama to broad comedy across his appearances; Hemsworth himself said, "I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself." Virtually every aspect of Thor's Avengers: Doomsday story still has to be revealed, the film opens on December 18, 2026, and Avengers: Doomsday or its 2027 sequel Avengers: Secret Wars could very well be Hemsworth's last time playing the character.
