A Baldur's Gate 3 fan dreads the HBO TV sequel
Baldur's Gate 3's size and success have prompted Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast to push the franchise beyond games, and a TV sequel is now on the way. That prospect worries a long-time fan who thinks a linear show will struggle to honour what players made of the game.
The central concern is simple: BG3 is not one story but thousands. My own canon involved a half-drow bard who sacrificed himself, becoming a mindflayer to save the party; other players will have very different outcomes. A single HBO series will have to pick one concrete narrative, and that choice risks undermining the personal adventures people invested hours in crafting.
People at Larian have felt similar unease. Lead writer Adam Smith admitted it felt strange to lose control of characters he'd helped create, and studio head Swen Vinke says Craig Mazin has already reached out and a studio visit may be possible.
