Barry equaliser earns Everton 1-1 draw with Leeds
Thierno Barry’s finish rescued Everton a 1-1 draw with Leeds in the Premier League, extending the forward’s run to four goals in five league games and reflecting a dominant half apiece. Barry, a £27m summer signing from Villarreal, had failed to score in his first 16 Everton appearances and from his first 15 attempts on goal, but has now scored five goals in his past 10 attempts.
Leeds were superior in the first half and took the lead through James Justin after a flowing move that exposed Everton’s defence; the visitors had been under pressure following weekend wins for relegation rivals Nottingham Forest and West Ham. David Moyes responded at half‑time by introducing Jarrad Branthwaite and Kiernan Dewsbury‑Hall, switching Everton to a 3-5-2 and replacing Dwight McNeil and Harrison Armstrong.
The changes brought greater control and chances: Karl Darlow tipped an improvised Barry effort wide before Barry equalised after Dewsbury‑Hall released Idrissa Gueye, whose low cross allowed Barry to flick a finish into the roof of the net. Everton then struck the woodwork when Gueye hit the crossbar, and Tyler Dibling came on late and crossed when a shot might have won it.
Moyes said: “I’m really pleased for Thierno… He is a young French under-21 international who is finding his way and just beginning to get settled in. … His goal was textbook.” Daniel Farke reflected: “It is a really good point for us on the road.
