Before Task, Mark Ruffalo Shone in Fincher's Zodiac
Mark Ruffalo headlines Task, an HBO crime series from the creator of Mare of Easttown. He plays Tom Brandis, a former priest who finds a new calling as an FBI agent; after a recent tragedy he is relegated to desk work until being called to join a task force. Before Task, Ruffalo appeared as Inspector Dave Toschi in David Fincher’s Zodiac (2007), a true-crime feature also starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
The film, inspired by Robert Graysmith’s book, follows a newspaper cartoonist’s obsessive hunt for the serial killer, with Gyllenhaal portraying Graysmith and Fincher depicting the desperate attempt to identify the Zodiac while staying close to the facts. Zodiac initially broke even at the box office and did not immediately gain broad traction, but it later developed a cult following thanks in part to performances by Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr.
