Black Ops 7's Meltdown remaster criticized for cleaner, less detailed look
Kotaku reports that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7's Season One Reloaded update, which arrived on January 9, added Fallout-themed cosmetics and a remade multiplayer map called Meltdown.
The remastered Meltdown, set inside a nuclear power plant, is said by Activision to feature "updated visuals" and "dynamic lighting." A comparison video by YouTuber Replay Mode and numerous social-media posts show the new version as cleaner and missing many details from the 2012 map—puddles, signs, exposed wiring, chainlink fencing and warning decals—which has prompted debate among players. One player asked, "How do you take a nuclear power plant and somehow make it look even more drab and lifeless?" while others argued the older map had better art direction or that the new version improves visibility.
The article notes the map still plays well and that the changes "seem to be focused entirely on making it easier to spot enemies," pointing out Valve has made similar adjustments to Counter-Strike maps. It adds that the remaster appears to favour clarity and esports balance over the original's grungier aesthetic, with the author writing, "I think this \"downgrade\" is a good example of how we lose a lot in the pursuit of making everything fair."
