Reporting by Polygon: Blizzard is renaming Overwatch 2 to Overwatch, walking back the numbered sequel as part of a push to treat the franchise as a "forever game." During a recent visit, Polygon asked developers and executives why they were making the change. Blizzard president Johanna Faries said the decision came from cross‑team consensus, with roughly 20 to 30 people urging the studio to "drop the 2." Faries described Overwatch as "a pillar for Blizzard" and said the team wanted a mindset that is not "limited to chronology" as it expands the universe into multiple experiences.

Walter Kong, head of development for live games, acknowledged the title has gone "through some tough times" and said the renaming reflects where the game is now. He added that the team set an internal goal of a "return to form" and that it will be up to players to decide whether the rebrand is deserved.

To mark the change, Blizzard plans a major launch on Feb.
