Blizzard’s World of Warcraft team warns that some major characters will not survive the Worldsoul Saga, a three-expansion story arc, the studio’s leads told PC Gamer while discussing Midnight, the saga’s midpoint.

The Worldsoul Saga is one of Blizzard’s most ambitious moves, committing to a planned three-expansion narrative so the team can tell larger, longer-reaching stories rather than one-off arcs.

Design director Maria Hamilton said, “There will be important characters that do not survive the trilogy. It’ll be a lot of death, I’m afraid,” and noted the team debates timing and consequences for those choices.

Game director Ion Hazzikostas added that narrative threads can sit for multiple expansions—“Chekhov’s Gun, or Chekhov’s Sword…is going to lie there for a couple of expansions before something comes of it”—as the team winds up for “big swings.”

Hamilton did not say which characters might die, and PC Gamer’s piece makes clear specific targets and timing remain unconfirmed, so which figures will fall and when is still unclear.
