Brigitte Bardot, the film star turned animal rights activist, was laid to rest after a funeral service in Saint-Tropez attended by Marine Le Pen, the far-right leader who the source said was her favourite politician. Bardot died at her La Madrague villa on 28 December, and her funeral was held at the Notre-Dame de l’Assomption church and broadcast on large screens across the town.

Her husband, Bernard d’Ormale, told Paris Match she had died of cancer and said she had dealt “very well” with two operations before the disease “took her” last month. The procession passed through the Place des Lices and by the port before her coffin entered the church to a Maria Callas song, the reporting said.

Bardot rose to international fame in the 1950s and was credited with changing French cinema with films such as And God Created Woman; she retired from acting in the 1970s and became an outspoken animal rights campaigner. The source said she became increasingly active on the far right and was convicted five times for hate speech, particularly about Muslims, and that up until her death she expressed contentment at Le Pen’s National Rally party’s rising share of the vote before the 2027 presidential race.

Those attending included family, her son Nicolas-Jacques Charrier, and public figures such as Jean-Roch, Mireille Mathieu, Caroline Margeridon and Paul Watson.
