People reports that Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix will miss the remainder of the NFL season after sustaining a fractured bone in his right ankle during the team’s game against the Buffalo Bills on Jan. 17, a development coach Sean Payton announced via the team’s official X account.

The injury occurred on a first-and-10 play from the Bills’ 36-yard line with just over six minutes left in overtime, per ESPN. After being tackled by Buffalo safety Cole Bishop, Nix was seen walking with a slight limp; on the following kneel-down play his right ankle appeared to twist, and he moved to the sideline before Will Lutz’s game-winning field goal. The second-year quarterback will be sidelined for the rest of the season. “There will be a lot of emotions, and then the refocus takes place,” Payton told reporters. “We celebrate the season for him.”

Dr. Norman Waldrop is expected to perform surgery on Jan. 20, the procedure he will allegedly carry out according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. Jarrett Stidham will replace Nix as the starting quarterback for the remainder of the playoffs; Payton said, “Stiddy’s ready to go,” and noted that Sam Ehlinger will serve as the team’s No. 2.
