Brown Girl Sport continues to cut through isolation and provide support
An upstairs room at Stamford Bridge marked the third anniversary of Brown Girl Sport, the award-winning online platform and community founded by Miriam Walker-Khan to highlight the stories of South Asian women and girls in sport and challenge persistent stereotypes.
At the event Walker-Khan announced a new supporters’ club for women of colour in partnership with Chelsea women and launched an ambassador programme. Players and athletes including Layla Banaras, Naomi Dattani, Lucindha Lawson, Asmita Ale and Eden Silva were involved in pioneering the group.
Attendees described the organisation as providing practical opportunities and solidarity. Leytonstone FC’s Liberty said it gives girls from diverse backgrounds chances they might not have had, while Farah Chowdhury said Brown Girl Sport has been a source of support when she has felt isolated or questioned in football spaces and a platform to challenge racism and Islamophobia.
