Bug Hall lives off-grid in Arkansas with wife and five kids after 'vow of poverty'
Former child star Bug Hall is living off the grid in Arkansas with his wife, Jill DeGroff, and their five children after saying he’s taken a “vow of poverty,” the actor told the Daily Mail. Hall documents the family’s “simple” life on X and is building a house on their 80-acre property while the family currently lives in a camper van.
Hall clarified in December 2025 that he doesn’t own a computer or TV but does have a phone, which he uses to post photos of his wife and their four daughters and one son. The children’s names have not been made public; in September 2025 Hall referred to his baby boy as an “heir” and his daughters as “dishwashers.” The couple, married since 2017, share glimpses of everyday life online — holiday photos, a November 2025 family football game and a December 2025 Christmas haul of simple toys.
Hall has posted about chores and home projects, from lugging bags of corn to clearing a “frozen poop … blockage” from their toilet and cutting blocking with a miter saw while prepping a daughter for first communion. Hall told the Daily Mail he is building a stone and timber-frame house “from scratch,” offering tips such as “the steps are simple enough,” identifying and clearing a homesite, drawing plans on graph paper, and laying out rooms at full scale on the ground.
He said he pays less than $300 in annual property taxes and recommended building rooms larger to allow room to grow.
