Cam Whitmore to miss remainder of season after deep-vein thrombosis diagnosis
Cbssports: The Washington Wizards announced that forward Cam Whitmore will miss the remainder of the season as he recovers from an earlier diagnosis of deep-vein thrombosis.
Whitmore has been out since early December after further evaluation discovered that his right shoulder soreness was DVT. He finished the season having played in 21 games, averaging 9.2 points and 2.8 rebounds on 45.6% from the field. The club’s announcement places Whitmore among a string of recent NBA players diagnosed with DVT, including Damian Lillard and Victor Wembanyama, whose season was cut short last February after a blood clot was found in his right shoulder and who missed the final 29 games.
DVT can cause blood clots in the veins of the arms or legs and may be hard to detect because symptoms can resemble general muscle soreness; detecting and treating clots is crucial because they can potentially travel to the lungs and cause pulmonary embolism. Recent examples show players can recover and return to high-level play, but Whitmore’s absence is a blow to a Wizards team sitting 10-29, which the report says is likely already looking ahead to the draft lottery this summer as it plans for the future.
