Carrick must clinch Champions League spot to be considered for Man Utd job
Michael Carrick has been told he must steer Manchester United into the Champions League if he is to be in contention for the permanent manager's job. Since replacing Ruben Amorim as interim boss he has gone unbeaten in his first five league games, guiding United to four wins and a draw and lifting the club into fourth, one point clear of fifth-placed Chelsea.
Mikaël Silvestre said Carrick will be considered for the role if he maintains that Champions League spot and if the players believe in what he is doing. He added that every training session and every game is an opportunity to show his worth, and that Carrick’s caretaker status and knowledge of the dressing room give him an advantage over an outside candidate.
Silvestre also credited Carrick with restoring Kobbie Mainoo to the side after Ruben Amorim had preferred Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes; Mainoo has started every game under Carrick and showed he could go 90 minutes and impact matches.
