One-club players are widely celebrated, with Athletic Club presenting One Club Man and One Club Woman awards to figures such as Paolo Maldini, Matthew Le Tissier and Malin Moström. The Knowledge asked which players came closest to 100% of their appearances for a single club without quite reaching it.

The piece compiled dozens of suggestions and counted players in ascending order of their share of appearances for one club. Non-league games were excluded and some historical appearance figures required judgement calls, so the percentages were presented with that caveat.

Examples ranged across eras and leagues: Gabby Agbonlahor was listed at 97.51%, David Narey 97.63%, Thomas Müller 98.38% (with a note that his figure may change while with Vancouver Whitecaps), David O’Leary 98.63%, Daniele De Rossi 98.88%, Rogério Ceni 99.01% and Lewis Dunk 99.41%.
