New CNN Film Frames Chevy Chase as a Complex, Often Combative Figure
A new CNN documentary, I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, directed by Marina Zenovich, portrays the comedian as a complicated figure: an influential physical comic and one-time film star who also carries a long-standing reputation for prickliness. Zenovich, known for films about fraught public figures, said she was drawn to the project by the starkly mixed opinions about Chase.
In the film she describes three tiers of perception: family and friends who protect him, Hollywood colleagues who often dislike him, and fans who remain devoted. The documentary explores several controversies in Chase’s career — including his exit from Community, reported remarks about Terry Sweeney, and critical memories from director John Carpenter — and includes Chase’s responses, which range from qualified denials to dismissive rebuttals.
Zenovich also traces how Chase’s difficult childhood, when he was physically abused by his mother and stepfather, and years of drug and alcohol use shaped his life and behavior. Chase acknowledges substance use, says he felt fulfilled today, and describes ongoing anxiety and lingering anger related to his upbringing.
The film follows Chase on a holiday road tour of Christmas Vacation screenings, where he still draws fan adoration even as he sometimes offends attendees. Zenovich suggested small acts of reconciliation — for example, writing to Sweeney — and Chase tentatively agreed in their conversation.
