Chicago Med: Dr. Mitch Ripley memorializes late friend Sully at Wrigley Field
Season 11 of Chicago Med delivers a tear-jerker after Dr. Mitch Ripley (Luke Mitchell) takes a day off from his Gaffney duties to memorialize his late best friend, Robert "Sully" Sullivan (Daniel Dorr). Ripley and Sully were childhood friends; Ripley eventually turned his life around while Sully continued to struggle with personal demons.
The two reconnected in Season 9, and Sully remained close to Ripley and his longtime girlfriend, Lynne (Hope Lauren), until his tragic death in Season 10. Sully’s arc included dating Lynne and expecting a child before he learned he had terminal cancer. While undergoing chemo at Gaffney, Sully assaulted one of Ripley’s patients to protect him, which briefly made Ripley the prime suspect.
Sully confessed to the attack and was arrested; after a hospital visit following a prison-related spleen injury, Ripley and Lynne had hopeful moments until Sully suffered a blood clot and died. Ripley felt Sully’s presence during Season 10’s "Down in a Hole" while rescuing a mother and child, and Season 11’s "Our So Called Lives" marked the one-year memorial.
Ripley and Lynne broke into Wrigley Field to spread Sully’s ashes — a moment that also revealed Ripley had struck up a connection with Gaffney E.D. Chief Caitlin Lenox (Sarah Ramos). Lynne told Ripley, "Sully was the best bad idea I've ever had," and encouraged him to take a chance on the chemistry with Lenox.
