Nbc reported that Season 11 of Chicago Med introduced Dr. Hannah Asher's father, Mark Asher, when viewers met him for the first time in the January 12 episode.

The episode shows Mark, a contractor, arriving at Gaffney and initially clashing with Dr. Dean Archer after generator problems led Archer to snap at him. Hannah greets her father with a hug, and a later lunch finds Archer and Mark bonding over military service before the conversation turns tense: Mark, who said he raised three children on his own, questioned Hannah's plan to parent without another parent in the home and raised concerns about her age gap with Archer. Archer defended Hannah, visited Mark to tell him she did not need further judgment, and Mark later visited Hannah to apologize and said he wanted things to be easier for her but trusted she could navigate whatever came her way.

The role of Mark Asher was played by Mike Pniewski, a character actor working since the early 1980s with credits that include 21 Jump Street, Wings, Home Improvement, Roseanne and L.A. Law, and films such as Remember the Titans, Ray and Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Pniewski has guest-starred on The Sopranos, Conviction and The Riches, had recurring roles on The Good Fight, Madam Secretary and Hightown, and has appeared multiple times across the Law & Order franchise, including recurring as Chief of Detectives Kenny Moran on Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
