Danny Boyle's 2002 film 28 Days Later, starring Cillian Murphy, reintroduced a contagious rage virus that spreads and collapses society. The movie made zombies more than "brain-eating monsters," revived the subgenre and became a cult classic that influenced later works such as The Last of Us.

The feature spawned 28 Weeks Later, starring Jeremy Renner, which continues the story six months later with a new group of characters. Boyle and original writer Alex Garland returned as executive producers; the sequel earned $72.3 million worldwide and holds a 73 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.

Nearly two decades passed before a third installment arrived. 28 Years Later saw Boyle and Garland return to direct and write respectively, with Murphy onboard as an executive producer.
