Kotaku reports that Comcept, the independent studio founded by Mega Man artist Keiji Inafune, has been officially dissolved this week, bringing a definitive end to the company behind Mighty No.9.

Inafune launched Comcept in 2010 after leaving Capcom following the cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3. One of the studio’s early projects was Mighty No.9, a spiritual successor to Mega Man that relied on Kickstarter funding.

Mighty No.9 ultimately became a disappointment both as a released game and for what it signaled about the promise of crowdfunding, according to the report.

Comcept was acquired by Level-5 in 2017. In 2024 the company announced Inafune had departed amid a reboot of the life-sim RPG Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time; oversight of that project shifted back to Level-5’s Osaka Office, and the game released last summer and was described as very good.

The final, official dissolution announced this week removes the last trace of Inafune’s legacy at the studio; Kotaku’s item does not detail any next steps for Comcept’s assets or staff.
