Comcept shuts down after 16 years despite 2025 hit Fantasy Life i
Japanese developer Comcept has been dissolved by decision of its general shareholders' meeting held on January 13, 2026, a notice published by Japanese outlet gamebiz (via Gematsu) and translated by GamesRadar+ says. The translated notice instructs anyone holding a claim against the company to apply within two months of the day following the notice's publication, warning that failure to apply will result in exclusion from the liquidation, GamesRadar+ reports.
Founded by former Capcom developer Keiji Inafune, Comcept is best known for missteps such as the infamous crowdfunded Mighty No. 9 and the Xbox-exclusive action game ReCore, which was co-developed with Armature Studio and drew mixed reception—praise for ambition but criticism for execution.
Comcept was later absorbed by Level-5 and became the Level-5 Osaka Office, which led development on Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time. The 2025 cozy JRPG launched to a glowing response from fans, but a year before release Inafune left and Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino said internal playtests produced "harsh evaluations," prompting a restructuring.
