1907 Crocker‑McMillin mansion in New Jersey listed for $19 million in bankruptcy
Businessinsider reports the 1907 Crocker‑McMillin mansion in Mahwah, New Jersey, is up for bankruptcy sale, listed at $19 million after the property was forfeited to the bankruptcy estate of Miles Guo in 2024.
The 50,000‑square‑foot, 75‑room estate features extensive wood and marble carvings and its original Aeolian player pipe organ. The home once sat on 1,100 acres (now 12) and includes 21 bedrooms; it was occupied in the months before Guo's 2023 arrest and he bought it for $26 million in December 2021, according to the report and court filings.
The mansion was built beginning in 1902 for George Crocker and completed in 1907, modeled on a 17th‑century English estate and equipped with then‑modern amenities. Subsequent owners included Emerson McMillin, the Archdiocese of Newark (which ran a seminary there from 1926 to 1984), and developer Ilija Pavlovic, who restored and expanded the house before selling it to Guo.
Federal prosecutors say Guo spent $18 million of victims' funds outfitting the property and $1 million on carpets; he was arrested in early 2023, convicted in 2024, and the title was forfeited later that year. The home remains listed at $19 million, and proceeds are to help pay some $1 billion in debt claims.
