HBO has given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order for Damon Lindelof’s adaptation of the suspense thriller The Chain, the network announced. The limited series is written and executive produced by Lindelof and is based on the New York Times bestselling book by Adrian McKinty.

The novel’s achingly intriguing synopsis was highlighted by the announcement: "YOUR PHONE RINGS. A STRANGER HAS KIDNAPPED YOUR CHILD. TO FREE THEM YOU MUST ABDUCT SOMEONE ELSE'S CHILD. YOUR CHILD WILL BE RELEASED WHEN YOUR VICTIM'S PARENTS KIDNAP ANOTHER CHILD. IF ANY OF THESE THINGS DON'T HAPPEN: YOUR CHILD WILL BE KILLED.

VICTIM. SURVIVOR. ABDUCTOR. CRIMINAL. YOU WILL BECOME EACH ONE. YOU ARE NOW PART OF THE CHAIN." Details are being kept under wraps, but HBO said Lindelof is expanding the mythology of McKinty’s award-winning thriller. Lindelof will serve as showrunner — a position he has not held since HBO’s Watchmen.

The pilot story credit goes to Damon Lindelof, Carly Wray, and Breannah Gibson, with Lindelof and Wray writing the pilot script. Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer are executive producers for Media Res, the co-studio behind the series, and Shane Salerno also serves as an executive producer.
