The 1990s are often called the era of the "Revisionist Western," and a handful of classics emerged, including Unforgiven, Tombstone and The Quick and the Dead. The period began with perhaps the greatest of them all: Dances with Wolves, an epic that few expected to succeed.

The film is now streaming for free in the United States on Pluto TV. Dances with Wolves endured a troubled production as studios deemed Westerns obsolete, and Kevin Costner had difficulty getting the project off the ground. When it opened in 1990 it drew positive reviews and became a massive box-office success, grossing more than $420 million worldwide against a reported $22 million budget.

The film elevated Costner to the A-list and won the Academy Award for Best Picture, only the second Western to do so; it was followed by Unforgiven and No Country for Old Men.
