DiCaprio, Del Toro and Rose Byrne Win at National Board of Review Gala
At Cipriani 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday night, Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio Del Toro and Rose Byrne were among the honorees at the annual National Board of Review gala. The evening’s big winner was Paul Thomas Anderson’s neo‑western "One Battle After Another," which took awards for best film, director, actor (DiCaprio), supporting actor (Del Toro) and breakthrough performance (Chase Infiniti).
Other winners included Jafar Panahi’s prison drama "It Was Just an Accident" (best international film); Ryan Coogler’s "Sinners" (best original screenplay and outstanding achievement in cinematography); and Byrne for best actress in "If I Had Legs I’d Kick You." Presenters included Martin Scorsese, Michael B.
Jordan, Paul Rudd and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Several honorees used their speeches to draw attention to current events. Mr. Coogler referenced the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, saying, "I can’t be here and not think about Renee." Jafar Panahi, who has been imprisoned and banned from filmmaking in Iran, said through an interpreter, "The Islamic Republic has caused a blood bath to delay its collapse.
Bodies are piling up on bodies, and those who have survived are searching for signs of their loved ones through mountains of corpses," and urged artists and the global film community to speak out.
