Directors Guild Announces Feature-Film Nominees, Including Anderson and Coogler
The Directors Guild of America announced on Thursday its feature-film nominations, extending recent momentum for Paul Thomas Anderson’s "One Battle After Another" and Ryan Coogler’s "Sinners."
The five directors nominated were Paul Thomas Anderson ("One Battle After Another"), Ryan Coogler ("Sinners"), Guillermo del Toro ("Frankenstein"), Josh Safdie ("Marty Supreme") and Chloé Zhao ("Hamnet").
The Times noted that typically all but one of the guild’s nominees will go on to receive an Oscar nomination; last year the guild’s nominee Edward Berger ("Conclave") was replaced in the eventual Oscar lineup by Coralie Fargeat for "The Substance." The piece added there remains hope for other global contenders, including Jafar Panahi ("It Was Just an Accident") and Joachim Trier ("Sentimental Value").
The guild also announced nominees for the first-time theatrical feature prize — Hasan Hadi ("The President’s Cake"), Harry Lighton ("Pillion"), Charlie Polinger ("The Plague"), Alex Russell ("Lurker") and Eva Victor ("Sorry, Baby") — and previously named documentary nominees, including Mstyslav Chernov ("2000 Meters to Andriivka"), Geeta Gandbhir ("The Perfect Neighbor"), Sara Khaki and Mohammadreza Eyni ("Cutting Through Rocks"), Elizabeth Lo ("Mistress Dispeller") and Laura Poitras and Mark Obenhaus ("Cover-Up"). The winners will be announced Feb. 7.
